Step 1 – Acropolis
The Acropolis of Athens and its monuments are universal symbols of the classical spirit and civilization and form the greatest architectural and artistic complex of the Greek Antiquity. We will start from the Theatre of Dionysus and we will go up to the top of the Sacred Rock where the Parthenon is located.
Step 2 – Theatre of Dionysus
The theatre of Dionysos was first built in the 6th century BC. Modified and expanded over the centuries, it is the oldest Greek theatre and the site where some of the most famous Ancient Greek plays were first performed.
Step 3 – The Odeon of Herodes
The Odeon of Herodus Atticus is today one of the best places to experience a live music performance. This ancient concert hall was built by the Athenian philosopher, teacher and politician Herodes Atticus. It was built in the memory of his wife.
Step 4 – Athena Nike
The temple of Athena Nike is the smallest temple in the Acropolis, placed at its southwest corner, at the edge of a high cliff.
Step 5 – Propylea
The word propylaea is the union of the prefix pro plus the plural of the Greek pylon or pylaion, meaning literally that which is before the gates, but the word has come to mean simply gate building.
Step 6 – Parthenon
The Parthenon was the centre of religious life in the powerful city-state of Athens. Built in the 5 century B.C., it was a symbol of the power, wealth and elevated culture of Athens.
Step 7 – Erechthion
A temple like no other that was dedicated to the legendary feud between gods Athena and Poseidon. It’s famous for a balcony with female statues.
Step 8 – Areopagus
This hill dedicated to god of war Ares was one of the courts of Athens as well as the place where St Paul preached Christianity to the Athenians.
